Deer Permit Area 181, Minnesota

Boreal forest mix of aspen, birch, red and white pine, and spruce-fir; interspersed with arboreal bogs, wetlands, and the Sax-Zim Bog complex in the northern portion. The Whiteface and Cloquet River drainages define much of the landscape. Small pockets of agricultural land exist near Meadowlands — one of the few arable areas in St. Louis County. Low to rolling topography typical of the Lake Superior watershed uplift.

Deer: Archery Sept 16–Dec 31; Firearm A Nov 4–19; Muzzleloader Nov 25–Dec 10. Antlerless by lottery only (2,000 permits issued when available); unit has been managed conservatively with effectively bucks-only harvest in recent years as population recovers — 812 deer harvested in 2024. Draw required for antlerless tags. Bear: present throughout the unit in forest and bog habitat; black bear hunting in northern MN is by lottery permit with a September–October season. Ruffed Grouse: OTC, no draw required; excellent habitat in aspen and alder edges throughout the unit. Turkey: present in the region; NWTF active in the Cloquet wildlife area, spring and fall seasons available OTC.

Classic northern Minnesota big woods deer hunting in a recovering population zone. The unit sits within prime ruffed grouse habitat — St. Louis County is among the best in the state — making combo deer-grouse hunts highly productive. Bears and wolves are present throughout. The Sax-Zim Bog area along the northern edge offers exceptional wildlife diversity. Conservative deer management means quality buck encounters with limited hunting pressure compared to agricultural zones further south.
