Deer Permit Area 178, Minnesota

Boreal mixed forest dominated by aspen, birch, spruce, and fir with lowland bogs, wetlands, and small lakes interspersed throughout. Rolling terrain typical of the Laurentian Upland with patches of agricultural openings near the southern fringe. No Boundary Waters or Superior National Forest overlap — this unit sits in the transition zone between the Iron Range and the Duluth metro.

Whitetail deer is the primary quarry; bucks require only a base license (OTC) while antlerless tags are lottery-only with applications due by September 5 annually. Population has recovered from a 2012-2013 low (~15 deer/sq mi) and managers are targeting ~18 deer/sq mi. Black bear are present across the unit and require a separate preference-point lottery draw through the MN DNR Bear Zone system. Ruffed grouse and spruce grouse are both huntable (season typically Sept 19 – Jan 3, 5-bird daily limit combined); aspen regeneration in logged areas provides prime habitat. No elk or turkey established in this unit.

One of the larger DPAs in northeastern Minnesota at ~795,000 acres, offering diverse habitat from open agricultural edges to dense boreal interior. Historically strong deer numbers — unit peaked near 26 deer per square mile in the mid-2000s with kills exceeding 5,000 annually. Population goal is approximately 18 deer per square mile. Attracts a mix of local Iron Range and Duluth-area hunters as well as downstate visitors. Ruffed grouse hunting in aspen stands is excellent. Black bear are present and huntable under separate lottery permit.
