Deer Permit Area 133, Minnesota

Boreal and mixed forest dominated by aspen, birch, spruce, and fir with dense undergrowth; transitions from the Lake Superior shoreline upward through rolling forested ridges into the Superior National Forest. Wetlands and lake basins are common throughout. Logging roads and hunter walking trails (Glipi, Moosewalk, Split Rock) provide the primary access corridors.

Deer: OTC archery and firearm license with one-deer limit; only 25 antlerless lottery permits issued — effectively bucks-only without a lottery tag. Season structure follows standard Minnesota zones (archery Sept–Dec, firearms November). Deer densities are low due to severe winters and boreal habitat; population management is conservative. Bear: present throughout the unit; Lake County falls within Minnesota's quota bear permit area system requiring a preference-point draw (apply by May). Season opens September 1. Grouse: ruffed grouse and spruce grouse are both present and huntable OTC from mid-September through January; aspen regeneration areas and logging cuts are prime habitat; this is one of Minnesota's top grouse regions. Turkey: sparse and at the edge of range — some birds reported near Two Harbors and Highway 2 corridor but no established huntable population; no reliable turkey opportunity. Elk: not present.

Vast roadless boreal wilderness with minimal hunting pressure; over 42 miles of dedicated hunter walking trails; genuine wilderness deer hunting experience near the Lake Superior shore; excellent ruffed and spruce grouse hunting in aspen cuts; black bear present with draw permit required; proximity to Superior National Forest adds substantial huntable acreage.
