Boreal forest dominated by spruce, fir, birch, and aspen in Cook and Lake Counties of northeastern Minnesota. Rocky ridgelines, glacially carved lake basins, black spruce bogs, and tamarack lowlands characterize the landscape. Much of the unit lies within or borders the Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, with dense understory and limited road access in the interior. Elevation changes are moderate with rocky outcrops common.

Whitetail deer are bucks-only under Zone 100 regulations reflecting a population still recovering from back-to-back severe winters in 2021-22 and 2022-23 combined with sustained wolf predation pressure. No antlerless permits issued for this DPA in recent seasons. Black bear are huntable under the statewide lottery bear license system - this region (bear permit area 19/20) has a healthy bear population. Ruffed grouse are OTC with a 5-bird daily limit; aspen cuts and shoreline alder runs hold good numbers. No elk or turkey present - this is boreal forest outside the range of both species.

Bucks-only designation with a recovering population means any deer taken here is hard-earned and quality tends to be high. Mature boreal forest provides outstanding ruffed grouse and snowshoe hare hunting alongside deer. Black bear are present in good numbers throughout the unit. The BWCA-adjacent landscape is remote and wilderness-quality; hunters willing to pack in or canoe will find near-zero competition. Wolf presence is a real factor - fresh sign does not always mean a deer is nearby.
