DPA 107 lies in Koochiching County in the Zone 100 northern forest, centered around Littlefork and bordered to the north by Voyageurs National Park. Covering 472 square miles of boreal forest dominated by black spruce, tamarack, aspen, and northern white cedar, this remote area offers deer hunting with very low antlerless permit availability — only 25 lottery tags issued annually — making most hunters bucks-only in practice. Hunting pressure runs moderate at roughly 4.7 firearms hunters per square mile, but the remote terrain means mature bucks and low competition away from opener weekend.

Terrain & elevation

Boreal forest in Koochiching County, 472 sq miles, dominated by black spruce, tamarack, northern white cedar, and aspen on glacial Lake Agassiz lake plain. Flat to gently rolling lowland terrain with extensive peatlands, wetland bogs, and numerous rivers and streams including the Littlefork River. Scattered upland ridges provide aspen and pine habitat.

moderate

Species & seasons

Deer: Zone 100 firearms season Nov 8-23; archery Sept 13-Dec 31; muzzleloader Nov 29-Dec 14. Antlerless permits by lottery only (25 quota, draws held annually, all preference levels exhausted in recent years — effectively bucks-only for most hunters). 2024 firearms harvest: 661 total (520 adult bucks, 17 fawn bucks, 118 adult does, 6 fawn does). Total harvest density 1.40 deer/sq mi. Bear: present and huntable under MN DNR lottery and surplus bear licenses (boreal bear country). Grouse: ruffed grouse and spruce grouse present statewide season Sept 13-Jan 4; aspen regrowth and spruce bogs provide excellent habitat. Turkey: not established in northern Koochiching County — no season applicable. Elk: no elk season in this area.

Highlights

Remote northern Minnesota boreal zone adjacent to Voyageurs National Park with extremely restricted antlerless lottery (25 tags per year, heavily oversubscribed with 0 winners in both 2023 and 2024 draws). Bucks-only in practice for nearly all hunters. Mature buck potential due to low overall pressure. Ruffed and spruce grouse abundant in aspen and spruce habitats. Black bear present and huntable under DNR bear permit.
