Sign in to contributeDPA 105 is a 932-square-mile northern Minnesota permit area spanning portions of Beltrami, Lake of the Woods, Koochiching, and Roseau counties, characterized by remote boreal forest, spruce-tamarack bogs, and aspen-birch uplands with roughly 21% public land. It is a hunter-choice area with a single-deer limit, offering archery, firearms, and muzzleloader seasons in classic big-woods conditions with low hunting pressure and opportunities for mature bucks. Black bear and ruffed grouse are also present, making this a versatile destination for northern Minnesota hunters.
Remote boreal forest dominated by spruce-tamarack bogs, aspen-birch uplands, and jack pine stands. The landscape is flat to gently rolling with numerous wetlands, beaver ponds, and small lakes typical of far northern Minnesota. Road access is limited in interior areas, creating true wilderness hunting conditions.
Approximately 21% of the 932-square-mile area (roughly 194 square miles) is public land. Key public access includes Beltrami Island State Forest (one of Minnesota's largest state forests at ~676,000 acres spanning Lake of the Woods, Roseau, and Beltrami counties), county forest lands in Koochiching and Lake of the Woods counties, and scattered state Wildlife Management Areas. Forest roads provide access to many interior areas, but portions of the unit require foot or ATV travel.

White-tailed deer are the primary big game species; the area is designated hunter-choice with a 1-deer limit (buck or antlerless). Archery season runs September 16 through December 31; firearm A season runs November 4-19; muzzleloader season runs November 25 through December 10; youth season October 19-22. Black bear are present and huntable under a separate drawn permit through MN DNR. Ruffed grouse and snowshoe hare are abundant small game species in the aspen and spruce habitats. Wild turkey range does not extend this far north and is not a target species in DPA 105.
One of Minnesota's most remote and lightly pressured deer permit areas. The vast Beltrami Island State Forest anchors the unit and provides extensive walk-in access. Mature bucks are attainable due to low hunter density. Excellent ruffed grouse and black bear hunting are available concurrently with deer season. Hunter-choice designation allows harvest of either a buck or a single antlerless deer.
