Flat to gently rolling sandy terrain dominated by jack pine and mixed hardwood forest; AuSable River main stream and tributaries provide key riparian corridors for deer movement. Oscoda County is lightly developed and more heavily forested than most Lower Peninsula counties.
Huron National Forest covers a significant portion of the county providing extensive public hunting access via forest roads and foot trails. Michigan DNR state forest land adds additional public acres. Private timberland with some managed access programs also available near Mio.
Low to moderate. Remote for the Lower Peninsula with limited local population; hunters travel from the south but the large public land base absorbs pressure across a wide area.

Wild turkey are present and huntable throughout the county. Ruffed grouse and woodcock offer excellent early-season upland hunting in the jack pine and aspen forest cover. Black bear range extends into the county.
