Sign in to contributeOgemaw County sits in north-central Michigan's transition zone where southern farmland gives way to northern forest, producing excellent whitetail habitat and a strong local hunting tradition. The west branch of the AuSable River and numerous inland lakes add edge habitat that concentrates deer movement through the county. West Branch serves as a hub for hunters pursuing both deer and turkey.
Rolling mix of agricultural land, hardwood forest, and wetland lowlands transitioning to heavier northern forest in the upper portions of the county. West Branch of the AuSable River provides significant riparian corridor habitat favored by deer.
Au Sable State Forest covers portions of the county providing public hunting; some DNR-managed game areas available. Primarily private farmland and timber company land through the agricultural zone requiring permission.
Moderate. North-central location draws dedicated hunters but the large county land base distributes pressure effectively across diverse habitats.
Over-the-counter; standard Lower Peninsula seasons apply. Some private land enrolled in Quality Deer Management programs with voluntary antler restrictions.
Wild turkey populations are solid throughout the county. Black bear range extends into the northern edge of Ogemaw County as the UP bear population pushes south.
