WMD 1, Maine

Extreme northern Maine boreal forest — dense spruce-fir and mixed hardwood stands, extensive wetlands, beaver flowages, and river corridors along the Allagash River and St. John River. Flat to gently rolling topography with some ridgelines. Elevation generally 600–1,200 ft. Deep snow winters limit deer but benefit moose. Canadian border to the north and west.

Low — extreme remoteness, gate fees, and long travel distances limit hunter numbers. Those willing to access the backcountry find some of the most solitary hunting conditions in the eastern US.

Antlerless (any-deer) permits are NOT typically issued for WMD 1 — deer densities are too low to support antlerless harvest. Buck-only hunting is the norm during firearms season. Either-sex opportunity exists statewide during regular archery season and youth day. Firearms season in WMDs 1–5 runs approximately late September through early November. Muzzleloader season follows firearms. Hunters should verify current MDIFW permit allocations annually as WMD 1 rarely receives antlerless permits.

DEER: Low density; buck-only firearms hunting typical; no antlerless permits normally issued; archery either-sex statewide. Firearms season approx. late September–early November in WMDs 1–5. MOOSE: Excellent; by lottery permit only; bull seasons in late Sept–Oct split periods; 80%+ success rates; one of Maine's best moose units. BEAR: Very good; baiting is legal in Maine (permit required on Public Reserved Land and WMAs; bait may be placed up to 30 days before season, must be 50 yards from any road, 500 yards from dwellings/campsites); bear season runs late August through late November statewide. TURKEY: Spring season open in WMD 1 (one bearded turkey limit for WMDs 1–6 and 8); fall turkey season is closed in WMD 1 and other northern districts due to low turkey populations; turkeys are uncommon in this far-northern boreal district and success is limited compared to southern Maine.

Remote tracking-style deer hunting for experienced backcountry hunters. Allagash River corridor and St. John watershed provide stunning wilderness setting. Wall tent and sporting camp hunts available. Very low hunting pressure relative to acreage.
