Zone 8, Massachusetts

Heavily fragmented suburban and exurban landscape of rolling glacial moraine hills, hardwood woodlots, wetland complexes, and residential open space. Upland oak-hickory forest remnants dominate available cover. The Blue Hills Reservation (7,000+ acres across Milton, Canton, Quincy, and Braintree) is the largest contiguous block. Stony Brook WMA, Fowl Meadow, and scattered Norfolk County parcels provide additional pockets of huntable forest. Suburban sprawl limits landscape connectivity throughout.

Low on public land due to restricted access and limited available acreage; deer populations are very high but hunting pressure is far below what population levels could support due to access barriers.

Antlerless Deer Permit (ADP) required for antlerless deer; apply by July 16 annual deadline via MassFishHunt, permits awarded August 1. Zone 8 receives one of the larger statewide ADP allocations (approximately 3,100 reported in 2023) reflecting high deer populations; odds vary year to year but surplus permits often available in late September. 2 antlered deer included with base hunting license. Season limits apply; daily antlerless bag limit removed as of 2025.

DEER: Archery season Oct 5-Nov 28; Shotgun season Nov 30-Dec 12; Primitive firearms Dec 14-31. Shotgun hunting is heavily restricted in suburban areas due to 500-ft dwelling setback and municipal firearm bylaws — archery is the primary method. The Blue Hills DCR archery hunt runs Mon-Thu only, Nov 3-Nov 26, requires a separate DCR application and mandatory orientation. Standard WMAs and DCR forests open to all licensed hunters under normal season rules. TURKEY: Open to hunting in WMZ 8. Spring season late April through late May (last Monday in April through 4th Saturday, no Sundays); fall season concurrent with archery deer season Oct 5-Nov 28. Spring bag limit 2 bearded birds; fall 1 bird either sex. Turkeys are abundant in suburban woodlots, parks, and open-space corridors. BEAR: Technically open statewide including Zone 8 under the 2025+ regulations, but black bear population in Suffolk/Norfolk counties is essentially nonexistent; not a realistic hunting target in Zone 8.

Very high deer densities (50+ per square mile in some areas) mean sightings are almost guaranteed on huntable parcels. Blue Hills Reservation is the flagship public hunting destination, offering a controlled archery-only program with mandatory orientation. Turkey are abundant throughout suburban woodlots. Hunters willing to navigate the access challenges can find excellent suburban whitetail hunting with minimal competition from other hunters.
