Zone 7, Massachusetts

Mixed hardwood-conifer forest interspersed with suburban development, wetlands, river corridors (Sudbury, Assabet, Concord watersheds), agricultural edges, and kettle ponds. Rolling glacial terrain with thick second-growth cover. Deer concentrate in wooded buffers between subdivisions and remaining farm fields, especially along wetland edges and river bottoms.

High — limited public acreage relative to dense human and deer population; archery spots on public WMAs are heavily scouted and used; private land access dramatically improves odds

Statewide license includes 2 antlered deer tags. Antlerless deer require a zone-specific ADP (Antlerless Deer Permit) for Zone 7. Application deadline is July 16 annually; results available August 1. Zone 7 consistently has surplus ADPs available for first-come purchase starting late September (typically Sept 27), with a limit of 1 ADP per zone per day until sold out — indicating meaningful antlerless opportunity. ADPs are zone-specific and cannot be used in other zones.

DEER: Archery season Oct 5–Nov 28, Shotgun Nov 30–Dec 12 (blaze orange required), Primitive Firearms Dec 14–31. No rifle hunting in MA. Shotguns limited to slugs, no larger than 10 gauge. Archery bows require 40 lb draw minimum. Many Zone 7 towns have local firearm discharge bylaws limiting shotgun hunters to archery-only setups — confirm town regulations before hunting. Youth Deer Hunt Day Oct 3. TURKEY: Spring season April 27–May 23 (Zones 1–13 including Zone 7); Fall season Oct 5–Nov 28. Fall archery-only Oct 5–17 and Nov 2–28. Shotguns max 10 gauge, shot no larger than #4. BEAR: Black bear season Sept 7–Dec 12 statewide (all zones open); 1 bear per calendar year. Bear are not commonly encountered in Zone 7 — the core bear range is western MA (Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire counties, Zones 1–5). Incidental bear encounters are possible but Zone 7 is not a productive bear zone. Archery legal entire bear season; rifles .23 cal or larger allowed first and second segments only. SUBURBAN RESTRICTIONS: Firearm discharge prohibited within 500 feet of any dwelling or building in use without owner/occupant permission — this substantially limits shotgun hunting in developed Zone 7 towns and pushes most hunters to archery equipment.

Exceptionally high deer density for Massachusetts; legitimate chance at trophy-class suburban bucks that experience relatively low hunting pressure due to firearm restrictions in many towns; multiple surplus ADPs available most years making antlerless harvest very achievable; Assabet River NWR provides quality public archery ground; fall turkey coincides with archery deer season for combo opportunities
