Zone 12, Massachusetts

Low-relief Cape Cod peninsula dominated by pitch pine and scrub oak barrens, interspersed with kettle ponds, coastal marshes, barrier beaches, and dense residential development. Sandy soils support thick oak browse. Habitat quality for deer is high but parcels large enough for hunting are scarce. Tick pressure (deer tick / Lyme disease) is among the highest in Massachusetts.

Moderate on the few large public tracts (Camp Edwards draws significant interest due to limited alternatives); low-to-moderate on National Seashore and town lands; private land is nearly impossible to access given the suburban character of the Cape.

Antlerless Deer Permit (ADP) required for all antlerless deer in Zone 12. Apply by July 16 annually via MassFishHunt; results available August 1. Zone 12 ADPs are limited and historically competitive — surplus permits for Zone 12 sell out quickly when available. Two antlered deer tags are included statewide with a hunting license. Camp Edwards controlled hunt applicants must pre-register by October 1 and are subject to base-specific antlerless allocation rules.

DEER: Archery season Oct 5 – Nov 28; Shotgun season Nov 30 – Dec 12; Primitive Firearms Dec 14 – Dec 31. Youth Deer Hunt Day Oct 3. WMZs 13 and 14 (islands) have additional early and winter seasons not applicable to Zone 12. Rifles prohibited statewide for deer. Suburban development creates extensive safety zones limiting shotgun use to larger parcels. TURKEY: Spring season Apr 27 – May 23 (Zones 1–13); fall season Oct 5 – Nov 28 (Zones 1–13); Youth Turkey Day Apr 25. Cape Cod National Seashore spring hunt requires free lottery NPS permit. Turkey populations are strong across Cape Cod. BEAR: Black bear range is limited to WMZs 1–5 in western Massachusetts — Zone 12 is not bear habitat and no bear season applies.

Camp Edwards WMA is the crown jewel of Cape Cod hunting — nearly 11,000 acres of managed military land with genuine wilderness character, minimal recreational conflict, and good deer numbers. Cape Cod National Seashore offers a unique multi-species experience across 40+ miles of Cape. High deer densities in the suburban matrix mean resident bowhunters willing to navigate property access and safety zones can be highly productive. Turkey populations are robust across the Cape's oak woodland mosaic.
