Trigg County is defined by Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, one of the nation's premier public hunting destinations spanning the peninsula between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. LBL provides exceptional deer and turkey hunting across diverse forested terrain, while the adjacent lakes attract waterfowl during fall migration. This is arguably the finest combination of public access and hunting quality in western Kentucky.

Terrain & elevation

Rolling to moderately hilly forested terrain on the peninsula between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley comprising the Land Between the Lakes corridor. Mixed hardwood forest, creek bottoms, and extensive lakeshore habitat create diverse conditions for wildlife.

Hunting pressure

Moderate to high on LBL public land during gun season. Popular entry zones can concentrate hunters, though the large acreage and remote interior areas receive noticeably less pressure.

Tags & permits

OTC deer permits purchased statewide. LBL maintains its own specific hunting regulations separate from standard Kentucky rules; verify current LBL regulations annually.

Species & seasons

Waterfowl hunting on Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley during fall migration is a significant draw for duck and goose hunters. Turkey hunting in the LBL forest is excellent spring and fall. LBL maintains a managed Elk and Bison Prairie but those species are not open to hunting.

Highlights

Land Between the Lakes NRA as premier western Kentucky public hunting destination; exceptional waterfowl hunting on twin lakes during fall migration
