About this unit
Sign in to contributeElliott County contains some of the largest contiguous roadless terrain in northeastern Kentucky, with Daniel Boone National Forest covering substantial acreage of steep hollows and forested ridges. Deer and turkey densities are solid, and the county sits within Kentucky's expanding black bear range. Remote terrain rewards hunters willing to hike past the easy access points.
Rugged Appalachian foothills with steep ridge-and-hollow topography and heavy mixed hardwood forest. Sandy Hook Creek and the Little Sandy River drain the landscape. Significant elevation change throughout the county.
Daniel Boone National Forest provides substantial public hunting land across much of the county. The county is lightly developed with many miles of forest roads and trails. Cave Run Lake in adjacent Rowan County adds KDFWR-managed access nearby.
Low. Sparse population, difficult terrain, and remote location keep hunting pressure minimal, making this one of the better under-the-radar public-land counties in northeastern Kentucky.
Statewide OTC license. Kentucky has established limited bear seasons in eastern counties - check current KDFWR regulations for applicable bear unit boundaries and reporting requirements.
Black bear numbers are increasing as the Kentucky population continues its northward expansion into northeastern counties. Turkey hunting in the national forest is excellent in spring. Ruffed grouse persist in remote hollow edges.
