Sign in to contributeSaline County occupies the Smoky Hills of central Kansas, where limestone ridges and Saline River bottomlands create productive edge habitat for white-tailed deer and wild turkey. CRP grasslands and wheat stubble fields hold modest pheasant populations while creek-bottom timber provides roost and nesting cover for turkey throughout the river corridor. Moderate pressure near Salina rewards hunters who work private-land edges and river-corridor timber.
Gently rolling Smoky Hills limestone terrain bisected by the Saline River and its tributaries; native grass CRP fields transition to wheat and grain sorghum cropland with scattered hardwood timber in creek and river drainages.
Primarily private agricultural land with limited KDWP walk-in hunting access (WIHA) parcels and a few small wildlife areas; the Saline River corridor offers the best pockets of accessible ground for public hunters.
Moderate; proximity to Salina generates consistent pressure on public parcels while rural creek drainages see less competition.
Over-the-counter statewide deer tag; unit-specific antler restrictions may apply under current KDWP regulations.
Wild turkey frequent riparian timber along the Saline River; pheasant are present in CRP and wheat-edge habitat; limited waterfowl opportunities on farm ponds and river backwaters.
The Saline River corridor provides some of the best creek-bottom ambush hunting in central Kansas; CRP-to-cropland edge hunting produces excellent early-season whitetail movement.
