Whitetail deer hide in the cedar breaks and creek drainages, while Rio Grande turkey thrive in the open cedar-grassland mix. This remote, thinly populated county sees minimal hunting pressure and rewards hunters willing to work the broken country.
Red Hills (Gyp Hills) define the county — red cedar-choked canyons, gypsum outcroppings, and red dirt creek drainages flowing south toward Oklahoma. Rugged broken terrain contrasts sharply with the agricultural plains to the north.
