Sign in to contributeNewton County in northwest Indiana occupies the low, flat landscape of the former Kankakee Marsh — once one of the largest wetland systems in the Midwest — and today hosts some of the best public waterfowl hunting in Indiana at Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area. The flat agricultural landscape also supports a remnant ring-necked pheasant population, one of the last in Indiana, making Newton a rare multi-species upland destination. Deer hunting is solid across the farm ground and Kankakee River corridor.
Extremely flat, low-lying glacial lake plain. Tile-drained agricultural fields stretch horizon to horizon with restored wetland basins at Willow Slough and LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Areas. Kankakee River provides a wooded corridor through the county.
Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area is a premier IDNR public waterfowl destination. LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Area provides additional wetland and upland hunting. Kankakee River corridor has limited public access. Farm ground is private.
Low to moderate for deer on farm ground; high at Willow Slough during peak waterfowl migration as hunters compete for blinds and spots.
Over-the-counter; standard Indiana deer license for all seasons.
Willow Slough is Indiana premier public waterfowl hunting area, drawing puddle ducks, diving ducks, and Canada geese during fall migration. Remnant ring-necked pheasant population persists in the agricultural fields — one of the few places in Indiana where pheasant hunting remains viable.
Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area is the top public waterfowl hunting destination in Indiana; remnant pheasant hunting in the flat northwest Indiana agricultural fields is a rare and regionally significant tradition.
