Sign in to contributeWhite County occupies the extreme southeast corner of Illinois at the confluence of the Wabash and Ohio Rivers, a geographic position that creates exceptional bottomland deer and turkey habitat in one of the least-pressured counties in the state. River corridor hardwoods grow large-bodied, heavy-antlered bucks, and the remote location filters out all but the most committed hunters. Spring turkey hunting in the bottomland timber rivals anything in southern Illinois.
Wabash and Ohio River bottomlands with extensive hardwood floodplain timber; upland terrain is flat to gently rolling agricultural land; the river confluence creates a unique mosaic of wetland, timber, and agricultural habitat.
Some IDNR wildlife management area access along the river corridors; Enfield State Fish and Wildlife Area provides public hunting; most productive bottomland is private with controlled access.
Low — the remote location in the southeastern corner of the state limits hunter numbers; those who make the trip find deer numbers and buck quality that justify the drive.
Illinois zone-based OTC firearm permits; the remote character and low pressure mean mature bucks are accessible to patient hunters during the rut.
Wild turkey are excellent in the river-bottom timber with strong spring gobbler numbers; the Ohio and Wabash Rivers attract migratory waterfowl and some public duck hunting access exists along the river corridors.
