The county carries a well-deserved reputation as one of the premier big buck destinations in western Illinois, with deer benefiting from a mix of hard mast, row crops, and dense river bottom cover. Wild turkeys are equally plentiful throughout the hardwood ridges.
Illinois River bottomlands with dense hardwood timber grade into upland agricultural fields with significant terrain relief along the valley walls. Mackinaw Creek drainage adds habitat diversity in the northern portion of the county.
Primarily private with limited public options. Some Corps of Engineers land along the Illinois River corridor. Permission hunting and lease arrangements are the standard access method for quality ground.
