White-tailed deer thrive in this corridor, and the county has a strong reputation for producing record-class bucks from the river bottoms. Wild turkey populations are healthy, and the Illinois River draws waterfowl during fall migration.
Illinois River floodplain with bottomland hardwoods, sand ridges, and row-crop uplands; Crow Creek and other small tributaries drain into the river corridor providing travel lanes for deer between timber and agricultural fields.
Marshall State Fish and Wildlife Area provides the primary public hunting ground; additional State parcels along the Bureau County line; the majority of productive timber is private agricultural land requiring landowner permission.
