Sign in to contributeFulton County anchors the Illinois River valley in west-central Illinois where flooded timber, backwater sloughs, and sprawling row-crop fields converge to create some of the most diverse big-game habitat in the state. River-bottom corridors between standing timber and agricultural fields routinely concentrate Pope and Young caliber bucks throughout the season. Banner Marsh and Rice Lake add a world-class waterfowl dimension that few Illinois counties can match.
Illinois River bottomlands with flooded timber, oxbow sloughs, and backwater lakes; upland row-crop agriculture on the glacial plains; mast-producing hardwood timber concentrated along river terraces and creek drainages
Exceptional public land for Illinois -- Banner Marsh State Fish and Wildlife Area, Rice Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, and Sanganois Conservation Area together provide tens of thousands of huntable acres across bottomland timber and managed wetlands
Moderate -- public acreage is large enough to absorb regional hunters during peak seasons; top-end river-bottom private ground is tightly controlled by landowners and hunting clubs
Illinois OTC archery permit valid statewide; firearm deer permits issued by county lottery with Fulton historically receiving one of the larger quotas in the region; bonus antlerless permits commonly available
Waterfowl hunting is exceptional -- Banner Marsh and Rice Lake sit in the heart of the Mississippi Flyway with mallards, divers, and Canada geese peaking October through December; turkey populations are strong in both river-bottom timber and upland woodlots
Banner Marsh State Fish and Wildlife Area is among the top public-land waterfowl destinations in Illinois; the Illinois River corridor produces an outsized number of record-book whitetails making Fulton a legitimate trophy destination
