DMU Walker, Georgia

Ridge and Valley physiographic province with two dominant elevated features: Pigeon Mountain (a detached Cumberland Plateau outlier cresting around 2,300 feet) and the rim of Lookout Mountain along the county's northwest edge, separated by the synclinal valley of McLemore Cove. The Cove floor sits near 750 feet and is largely cultivated — hay fields, row crops, and scattered woodlots — while the mountain flanks carry mixed oak-hickory hardwoods with steep, broken sandstone terrain. Chickamauga Creek and its tributaries drain the county's central and eastern lowlands. Deer movement is tightly tied to acorn production on the upper benches in early season and field edges in the Cove through the rut and into late season.

Moderate to heavy on the WMA, particularly at trailhead-accessible areas and any food plots during gun season. Walker County sits within easy day-trip range of the Chattanooga, TN metro (roughly 25 miles), and the WMA parking areas fill quickly on opening weekend. Quota archery and primitive-weapons hunts on Pigeon Mountain filter pressure effectively — those tags are worth applying for. The WMA's interior north-facing drainages and upper-bench hardwood pockets see significantly lighter boot traffic. Private land in McLemore Cove is low-pressure by nature of scarcity; hunters who secure access there operate largely alone.

Walker County is in Georgia's Green Zone (DMU 2, WRD Region 1). Archery season runs mid-September through early January; a short primitive-weapons season falls in mid-October; modern gun season opens in late October and runs through early January (consult current Georgia DNR proclamation for exact dates each year). Antler restrictions require harvested bucks to have a minimum of 4 antler points (1 inch or longer) on one side OR a minimum 15-inch inside spread. Statewide season bag limit is 10 deer total with no more than 2 antlered bucks. Free antlerless deer stamps may be required for does harvested on WMA tracts — check the current Georgia DNR WMA regulations sheet before the season.

Eastern wild turkey are the county's secondary big game; Pigeon Mountain's mature hardwoods hold a solid population and Georgia DNR runs quota spring turkey hunts on the WMA. Wild hogs have established a foothold in Walker County and can be taken during the deer season with appropriate licensing; they are most concentrated in the Cove's agricultural fringes and creek bottoms. Squirrel hunting in the WMA's upland oaks can be excellent in mast years. Ruffed grouse were historically present in small numbers on the upper mountain flanks but have declined sharply statewide and should not be counted on. Dove hunting is possible around McLemore Cove field edges but formal managed fields are scarce. Waterfowl opportunities are limited to jump-shooting wood ducks on Chickamauga Creek and tributary beaver ponds.

McLemore Cove field edges adjacent to mountain timber funnels produce predictable early-morning and late-afternoon deer movement that rivals any agricultural county in the state — the problem is getting in. On the WMA, north-facing benches on Pigeon Mountain's interior hold thermal-driven morning movement during the rut; mature bucks use these benches as staging cover before hitting the Cove. The NW Georgia rut typically peaks mid-to-late November, aligning with the gun season and creating crossing opportunities at known saddles and hollow junctions between the plateau and valley. Hunters applying for Crockford-Pigeon Mountain WMA quota hunts gain access to less-pressured tracts that are essentially off-limits during non-quota periods, a significant advantage worth the application effort each July.
