Sign in to contributeUnion County sits in Georgia''s extreme northeast corner within the Blue Ridge Mountains — the highest-elevation, most rugged terrain in the state. It is managed under the Cyan Zone, which carries some of the most restrictive antlerless regulations in Georgia: doe harvest is permitted only during two narrow windows (Nov. 7–13 and Jan. 1) rather than throughout the firearms season as in most of the state. Cooper''s Creek WMA (30,000+ acres spanning Union and Fannin counties) and Chattahoochee National Forest lands provide the bulk of public hunting access, though steep topography, dense hardwood and hemlock cover, and low deer densities make this among the most challenging deer counties in Georgia. Hunting pressure is light to moderate on public land — solitude is common, but so are long sits without deer sign. The county rewards patient, mobile hunters who scout hard and are willing to work elevation. Black bear and wild turkey are co-inhabitants and noteworthy targets alongside deer.
High Blue Ridge Mountains; elevations commonly 2,000–4,500 ft. Steep ridges, deep hollows, and creek drainages. Dominant cover is mixed hardwood (oak, poplar, maple), white pine, hemlock, and rhododendron thickets. Access roads are often gravel forest service roads subject to seasonal closures.
Primary public land is Cooper''s Creek WMA (~30,000 acres, Chattahoochee National Forest, Union/Fannin counties) managed jointly by USFS and GA WRD. Additional Chattahoochee NF lands are open to hunting. No entrance fee; hunting license required. ATVs/UTVs restricted to designated roads only. Camping available at Cooper Creek and Mulky campgrounds (Recreation.gov reservations). Blairsville is the county seat and nearest full-service town.
Light to moderate on public land. The mountain terrain and low deer density deter casual hunters. Backcountry areas see very few hunters; trailhead-adjacent zones receive more pressure during firearms opener. Solitude is achievable with a short hike off main access roads.
Cyan Zone — highly restricted antlerless harvest. Either-sex (doe) days for Union County (2025-26): Nov. 7–13, 2025 and Jan. 1, 2026 only. All other dates during archery, primitive weapons, and firearms seasons are buck-only. Statewide bag limit: 12 deer total (max 10 antlerless, max 2 antlered). Chattahoochee NF lands east of I-75 are closed to antlerless deer entirely — confirm specific parcel rules annually with GA WRD.
Archery: Sept. 13 – Oct. 10 (either-sex during archery). Primitive Weapons/Muzzleloader: Oct. 11–17 (either-sex). Statewide Firearms: Oct. 18 – Jan. 11, 2026 (antlerless restricted to Cyan Zone doe days only in Union County). Turkey: spring season typically mid-April through mid-May statewide. Black bear season runs concurrently in the WMA — check bear zone and quota regulations. Grouse and small game also available.
One of Georgia''s few true wilderness deer hunts. Exceptionally low hunting pressure in remote drainages of Cooper''s Creek WMA. Realistic chance at mature bucks due to natural age structure from low harvest pressure. Stunning fall foliage and mountain scenery. Dual-purpose hunt — black bear are present and huntable in the same area. Best suited for fit hunters comfortable with steep terrain and long-range scouting.
