DMU Troup, Georgia

Troup County sits in the Georgia Piedmont at roughly 600-900 feet elevation, characterized by gently rolling red-clay hills near the Alabama border. The western and southern county edge is defined by the Chattahoochee River corridor and West Point Lake, a 26,500-acre reservoir that creates miles of productive bottomland edge. Secondary drainages including Yellow Jacket Creek and numerous Piedmont streams carve wooded hollows across the county. Land cover is a mosaic of loblolly and shortleaf pine plantations, mixed pine-hardwood uplands, bottomland hardwoods along creek corridors, scattered pasture and row-crop fields, and suburban development around LaGrange. Dense understory of native shrubs and briar patches on red clay soils provides excellent deer cover.

Moderate. The WMA and Corps land draw steady local pressure from the LaGrange-Columbus metro corridor, particularly during the October firearms opener and the November rut. Overall county pressure is lower than metro-adjacent north Georgia counties but higher than remote south Georgia coastal plain units. Weekday hunting on Corps land and the more remote WMA tracts can offer reasonable solitude.

Troup County carries antler restrictions: antlered bucks must have a minimum of 4 points (1 inch or longer) on either antler OR a minimum 15-inch outside antler spread to be legal. Statewide bag limit is 12 deer per season with no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered bucks. Troup is in the Green region, qualifying for a special two-day early antlerless firearm weekend (Oct 4-5). Antlerless deer are either-sex eligible throughout the full season. Georgia Game Check reporting required within 24 hours of harvest.

Deer: archery season Sept 13 through Jan 11; youth and primitive weapons Oct 11-17; main firearms season Oct 18 through Jan 11. Turkey: private land season opens March 28, WMA and public land opens April 4, statewide close May 15; bag limit 1 gobbler per day, 3 per season. Feral hogs: no closed season and no bag limit on private land, may be taken at night and over bait; WMA hog hunting follows DNR-posted regulations. Dove, squirrel, rabbit, and waterfowl seasons also available. Bobcat and coyote may be taken year-round with a valid hunting license.

West Point Lake creates extensive riparian edge that concentrates deer movement throughout the season, especially during the rut when bucks cruise bottomland corridors. The 10,000-acre Corps of Engineers hunting block gives public land hunters genuine space beyond the main WMA. County-level antler restrictions signal a quality deer management culture, and hunting clubs on large private timber tracts contribute to a broader landscape-level approach. The pine-hardwood mosaic produces consistent hard mast for fall deer movement, and the West Point Lake backwaters offer bonus waterfowl hunting from the same access areas.
