DMU Pierce, Georgia

Pierce County occupies the Lower Coastal Plain of southeastern Georgia, covering roughly 343 square miles of nearly level terrain at elevations between 40 and 200 feet. The landscape is dominated by managed pine plantations interspersed with hardwood-lined creek bottoms and cypress-gum wetlands. The Satilla River forms part of the county's southern boundary while the Little Satilla River and its tributaries drain the northern half. Sandy, well-drained soils support dense longleaf and slash pine timber operations, and the river corridors create thick tangles of gallberry, wax myrtle, and swamp chestnut oak that shelter deer year-round.

Low to moderate relative to the rest of Georgia. Pierce County's sparse population and limited road access into river swamps mean weekday hunters on Little Satilla WMA often have the woods to themselves. Opening weekend of firearms season draws regional hunters from Waycross and Savannah, but pressure dissipates quickly. Private timber leases are competitive but not as saturated as Piedmont or suburban metro counties.

Georgia statewide bag limit is 12 deer total per season: no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered. One of the two antlered deer must meet the antler restriction (minimum 4 points, each at least 1 inch long, on one side; or minimum 15-inch outside antler spread). Antlerless deer may be taken throughout the season. Pierce County falls in the Green region, which qualifies for a special two-day antlerless-only firearms weekend (Oct 4–5, 2025) before main season opens. Either-sex harvest is permitted throughout archery, primitive weapons, and firearms seasons.

Deer season: archery opens September 13; primitive weapons October 11–17; firearms October 18–January 11, with archery running concurrent through January. Turkey season opens March 28 on private land (April 4 on public/WMA land) and closes May 15 statewide; the coastal plain holds strong Eastern wild turkey numbers with consistent spring gobbler activity in open pine stands. Feral hogs may be taken year-round on private land with no bag limit; on Little Satilla WMA hogs are legal during all big and small game seasons plus a dedicated May 16–31 WMA hog season. Small game (squirrel, rabbit, dove) and waterfowl along Satilla River and WMA impoundments round out the calendar.

Pierce County delivers classic south Georgia pine plantation deer hunting anchored by Little Satilla WMA's nearly 19,000 acres of public ground — one of the most accessible large WMAs in the southeast Georgia coastal corridor. Blackwater river swamps along the Satilla and Little Satilla concentrate deer and hold them through the October rut, which peaks earlier here than in north Georgia counties. Trophy potential is modest by Piedmont standards but mature bucks with heavy frames are taken annually from the dense river bottoms. The combination of public WMA access, year-round hog hunting on private land, and liberal 10-antlerless limits makes Pierce County an underrated destination for hunters willing to work the swamp.
