DMU Paulding, Georgia

Paulding County sits entirely within Georgia's Piedmont physiographic region, roughly 30 miles west of Atlanta at elevations of 900–1,100 feet. Rolling, wooded ridgelines and creek drainages dominate the landscape, with the southernmost Blue Ridge foothills brushing the county's northern edge. Land cover is predominantly mixed pine-hardwood forest — loblolly and shortleaf pine interspersed with white oak, red oak, hickory, and sweetgum — with bottomland hardwood pockets along creek corridors. Pumpkinvine Creek, Euharlee Creek, and upper Etowah River tributaries thread through the county. The eastern portion faces suburban pressure from Dallas and Hiram, while the western third remains heavily forested.

Moderate to high by Georgia standards. Proximity to metro Atlanta (Dallas and Hiram sit 30–35 miles from I-285) draws substantial weekend traffic to Paulding Forest and Sheffield WMAs, particularly during firearms season when parking lots fill early. The extended archery season through January 31 helps distribute bowhunter pressure over a longer window. Private land in the county's less-developed western and northern portions sees lighter foot traffic. Overall, expect more competition for spots than in rural south or central Georgia counties.

Statewide season limit is 12 deer total. Hunters may take up to 10 antlerless deer and no more than 2 antlered bucks; one of the two bucks must be a Quality Buck (4+ points one inch or longer on one side, or minimum 15-inch outside spread). Paulding is an extended archery county, allowing either-sex archery harvest through January 31. An antlerless-only firearms weekend (Oct. 4–5) opens before main gun season. The liberal 10-antlerless limit reflects GADNR policy to manage elevated deer densities in Piedmont metro-fringe counties.

Feral hog: no closed season or bag limit on private land; night hunting with artificial light permitted on private land; WMA hog season typically May 16–31. Black bear: present on both WMAs and huntable under statewide zone regulations. Small game: squirrel Aug. 15–Feb. 28 (12/day); rabbit Nov. 15–Feb. 28 (12/day).

Paulding County hosts two of metro Atlanta's premier public hunting properties — Paulding Forest WMA and Sheffield WMA — forming a combined 30,000-plus-acre Piedmont corridor ranked as a top-ten state deer WMA and Georgia's number-two wild turkey WMA. Sheffield's rare mountain longleaf pine stand produces excellent turkey and archery deer habitat unlike anywhere else in the Piedmont. The extended archery season through January 31 grants bowhunters an extra month of either-sex opportunity on private land — rare for a county this close to a major city. The Quality Buck rule protects young bucks while the liberal 10-antlerless limit rewards hunters committed to herd management.
