DMU Oglethorpe, Georgia

Oglethorpe County lies entirely within Georgia's Piedmont physiographic region, characterized by gently rolling hills of red clay soil averaging around 610 ft elevation, with isolated ridges topping 1,000 ft in the northern portion of the county. Land cover is predominantly upland mixed pine/hardwood forest interspersed with agricultural fields and improved pasture on flatter ground. The Broad River and its South Fork drain the county, carving bluffs up to 200 ft along their banks and creating fertile river-bottom hardwood corridors. The Broad River watershed is one of the least-developed in the Georgia Piedmont, preserving extensive bottomland and riparian habitat that concentrates wildlife.

Moderate and below-average for Georgia. Oglethorpe County is small and rural with a low population density, and Redlands WMA, while drawing hunters from the Athens metro area and surrounding counties, is large enough at 37,500 acres to absorb pressure across its mixed-county footprint. Private land hunting on leased timberland is common and largely separate from WMA competition. Overall pressure is well below that found near major metro-area WMAs, making mid-week or archery-season hunting particularly uncrowded.

Statewide GREEN-region regulations apply. Archery season: Sept 13 – Jan 31. Antlerless-only firearms weekend: Oct 4–5. Youth and primitive weapons season: Oct 11–17. General firearms season: Oct 18 – Jan 11. Season bag limit: 12 deer total — up to 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered bucks. One of the two bucks must meet Quality Buck criteria (minimum 4 points of 1 inch or longer on one side, OR a minimum 15-inch outside antler spread). Georgia's liberal 10-doe limit makes antlerless harvest highly accessible throughout the season.

White-tailed deer is the primary big game species. Eastern wild turkey season runs March 28 – May 15 on private land and April 4 – May 15 on public land (Redlands WMA); the Piedmont region has posted the state's strongest turkey production in recent surveys at approximately 1.9 poults per hen. Feral hogs are present and may be taken year-round with no bag limit on private land; on Redlands WMA hogs may be harvested during any open season using weapons legal for that season, with a dedicated hog/coyote season typically May 16–31. Small game species including squirrel, rabbit, and raccoon are also available on Redlands WMA. No county-specific firearms restrictions apply beyond statewide rules.

Redlands WMA gives public-land hunters access to 37,500 acres of USFS mixed pine/hardwood ground — a rarity in Georgia's private-land-dominated Piedmont. The Broad River corridor, one of the least-developed watersheds in the Georgia Piedmont with bluffs up to 200 ft, creates undisturbed river-bottom hardwood habitat that concentrates deer through the rut. Turkey hunting is legitimately good here given the Piedmont's region-leading poult production numbers. The county's rural character, abundance of leasable private timberland, and moderate hunting pressure make it a strong option for Piedmont hunters seeking quality bucks without competing with the crowds found on WMAs closer to Atlanta or Macon.
