DMU Oconee, Georgia

Oconee County occupies Georgia's Piedmont physiographic province, characterized by gently rolling hills and forested ridgelines at elevations of roughly 600–800 feet. The landscape is a mosaic of mixed pine-hardwood stands, planted loblolly pine, creek bottom hardwoods, and interspersed agricultural fields. The Oconee River and its tributaries — including Barber Creek and the North Fork Oconee — provide riparian corridors through the county. Growing suburban development from the adjacent Athens metro has fragmented some farm ground, but wooded tracts remain prevalent across the county's roughly 186 square miles.

Moderate to high. Oconee County's location adjacent to Athens (home of the University of Georgia) drives above-average hunter density and lease demand compared to most Piedmont counties. Redlands WMA draws hunters from across the Athens metro on opening weekends. Private land access is competitive and often leased well in advance. The small county footprint and suburban encroachment limit available huntable acreage, making pressure notably higher than the Georgia Piedmont average.

Statewide season structure applies. Archery: Sept. 13–Oct. 10 (either-sex statewide). Youth and primitive weapons: Oct. 11–17. Firearms: Oct. 18–Jan. 11. An antlerless-only bonus firearms weekend runs Oct. 4–5 for most counties. Oconee County falls in the GREEN color region with either-sex firearms hunting available throughout most of the season. Season bag limit: 12 deer total — no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered bucks. One buck must meet Quality Buck criteria (4+ points at least 1 inch long on one side, or 15-inch or greater outside spread).

White-tailed deer are the primary quarry. Wild turkey season opens March 28 on private land and April 4 on WMAs and National Forest land, closing May 15 statewide; season bag limit is 2 gobblers, 1 per day. Feral hogs may be taken year-round on private land with no bag limit and no closed season; on WMAs hogs are legal during any open game season or the designated WMA Hog and Coyote season (May 16–31). Small game includes squirrel (Aug. 15–Feb. 28), rabbit, dove, and quail. Waterfowl and raccoon are pursued seasonally along river and creek bottoms.

Redlands WMA's scattered Oconee National Forest tracts provide free public access to rolling Piedmont terrain with creek bottoms and pine-hardwood edges that consistently hold deer. Oconee County has been flagged as an improving county for trophy buck production by Georgia Outdoor News, with private farm and timber tracts capable of growing mature bucks under quality management. The Piedmont transition zone — where food plots on agricultural land border planted pine stands — creates productive edge habitat. Spring turkey hunting on the National Forest tracts offers a quality DIY experience within easy reach of Atlanta or Augusta. Feral hog hunting on private land is unrestricted year-round and provides fast action in the off-season.
