DMU Miller, Georgia

Miller County occupies the Upper Coastal Plain of southwestern Georgia, a gently rolling to nearly flat landscape averaging around 170 feet in elevation. The county is a mosaic of row-crop agriculture — predominantly peanuts and cotton — interspersed with planted loblolly pine timber tracts, hardwood creek bottoms, and scattered wetland drainages. The southeastern corner drains into the lower Flint River sub-basin, with tributary creeks cutting through pine uplands into bottomland hardwood swamp habitat. No mountains or ridges; terrain is defined by long agricultural flats, pine plantation edges, and creek-bottom draws typical of the southwestern Coastal Plain.

Low to moderate overall, driven by the county's small size (~283 sq mi), sparse population, and limited public land. Mayhaw WMA draws some regional pressure during the firearms opener but is far less crowded than high-profile metro-area WMAs in Georgia. The vast majority of private land is locked in generational leases and plantation operations, keeping general hunting pressure low relative to most of the state. Midweek and archery-season hunting on Mayhaw can feel genuinely solitary.

Statewide bag limit is 12 deer per season: no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered, with one buck required to meet Quality Buck criteria (4+ points at least one inch long on one side, or minimum 15-inch outside spread). Miller County carries a special late-fawn restriction: archery hunters may harvest only antlered bucks during the first two weeks of archery season (September 13–26) because the area's later rut pushes fawn-drop later into summer. Firearms season runs October 18 through January 15 — an extended close compared to the January 11 statewide end date — for either-sex deer. Archery season extends through January 31. All harvest must be reported via Georgia Game Check within 24 hours.

Deer: archery opens September 13 (bucks-only September 13–26 due to late-rut fawn restriction); youth and primitive weapons season October 11–17; firearms October 18–January 15 (Miller County extended close); archery extended January 16–31. Turkey: spring season opens March 28 on private land and April 4 on Mayhaw WMA, runs through May 15 statewide; limit is 1 gobbler per day, 3 per season; free harvest record required. Feral hogs: no closed season and no bag limit on private land; on Mayhaw WMA hogs may be taken with any legal weapon during any open hunting season. Waterfowl (ducks) and dove, as well as quail and other small game, are also available — Mayhaw's wetland habitat draws wintering ducks.

Miller County sits in the heart of Georgia's premier trophy whitetail belt. The southwestern tier of the state — anchored by Flint River basin genetics and abundant agricultural nutrition from peanut and cotton fields — consistently produces high-quality bucks; neighboring Colquitt County ranks among the state's top producers of bucks exceeding 125 B&C inches, and Miller shares the same habitat and gene pool. The county's extended firearms season through January 15 paired with a late rut means peak chasing and breeding activity can run deep into December and January — a meaningful edge over most Georgia counties. Mayhaw WMA delivers 6,300 acres of publicly accessible mixed pine-upland and hardwood-bottom habitat for hunters who cannot access the surrounding private leases. Plantation operations throughout the county practice intensive QDM, and the combination of agricultural nutrition and mature-age-class buck management creates genuine trophy potential on managed private ground.
