Terrain is flat and low-lying, rarely exceeding 25 feet in elevation, with extensive tidal creeks, salt marshes, and estuarine systems comprising roughly 26 percent of the county's 574 square miles. Uplands are dominated by longleaf and slash pine flatwoods with scattered sand ridges; bottomland hardwoods of live oak, water oak, and cypress line the Altamaha and its tributary swamps. Harris Neck's permit-only managed hunts cap access. Extensive private timberland and plantation holdings limit walk-in opportunity beyond the two public tracts.

Georgia statewide bag limit is 12 deer per season — no more than 10 antlerless and 2 antlered — with a quality-buck rule requiring that one antlered deer have at least 4 antler points (1 inch or longer) on one side or a minimum 15-inch outside spread. McIntosh County (Green region) season structure: archery September 13 – January 11; youth and primitive weapons October 11–17; antlerless-only firearms weekend October 4–5; main firearms season October 18 – January 11. Georgia's liberal antlerless framework imposes no county-level antlerless cap in coastal plain counties, allowing aggressive doe harvest throughout the season.

White-tailed deer are the primary big-game target; the rut in the Lower Coastal Plain typically runs slightly earlier than northern Georgia, often peaking mid-October through early November. Spring turkey season runs March 28 – May 15 on private land and April 4 – May 15 on public land (WMAs); Altamaha bottomlands and pine flatwoods hold Eastern wild turkeys with Osceola influence. McIntosh County's signature draw is the Townsend WMA complex — 32,000 acres of river-bottom timber and pine flatwoods along the Altamaha, one of the larger walk-in WMA complexes on Georgia's coast. The Altamaha River corridor is ecologically significant and consistently produces mature bucks in the flooded back tracts where hunting pressure is lightest. Harris Neck NWR adds a second permit-access option with a managed deer herd in a diverse coastal refuge setting. The county's Coastal Plain position delivers an early rut window for hunters willing to navigate swampy terrain. Proximity to Darien and US 17 makes this a practical coastal Georgia hunt with genuine wilderness character.
