DMU McDuffie, Georgia

Piedmont province; gently rolling hills of red clay soils (saprolite) and low ridges at 300–500 feet elevation. Land cover is a mix of loblolly and shortleaf pine plantations, mixed pine-hardwood forest (white oak, northern red oak, hickory), and scattered row-crop agriculture around the county seat of Thomson. The Brier Creek drainage south of Thomson and the Little River north of Thomson both flow toward the Savannah River, creating productive creek-bottom hardwood corridors that concentrate deer movement.

Moderate. The county is a mix of private hunting clubs, some running deer dogs (neighboring Jefferson County clubs can push deer across Brier Creek), and open WMA access. Pressure spikes on opening firearms weekends, particularly around Clarks Hill WMA, but mid-week and remote Corp land hunting stays light to moderate. Overall pressure is lower than metro-fringe and highly publicized trophy counties.

Georgia statewide limit applies: 12 deer total per season, no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered bucks; one antlered buck must meet Quality Buck criteria (4+ antler points at least 1 inch long on one side, or 15-inch minimum outside spread). McDuffie County falls in the Yellow zone. Archery: Sept. 13–Oct. 10 (either-sex). Primitive weapons: Oct. 11–17 (either-sex). Firearms: Oct. 18–Nov. 28 (bucks only), Nov. 29–30 (either-sex), Dec. 1–31 (bucks only), Jan. 1 (either-sex), Jan. 2–11 (bucks only). A new antlerless-only firearms weekend (Oct. 4–5) was added for participating counties in 2025.

White-tailed deer are the primary big game target across archery, primitive weapons, and firearms seasons from September through January. Eastern wild turkey spring season opens March 29 on private land (April 5 on WMAs) through May 15; bag limit is 3 gobblers per season. Feral hogs are present and may be taken year-round on private land with no bag limit; WMA hog hunts typically open in mid-to-late May. Dove and waterfowl (including wood duck) hunting available at Clarks Hill WMA during respective seasons. Squirrel and rabbit seasons also apply countywide under statewide dates.

McDuffie County's strongest draw is the Clarks Hill Lake WMA complex along its northern edge — over 13,000 Corps of Engineers acres of mature mixed pine-hardwood forest providing free, license-only public access for deer, turkey, and waterfowl hunters. The Brier Creek bottoms in the county's southern end hold a local reputation for larger-bodied bucks; hunters who push into the creek corridor away from roads encounter less pressure and better age-class deer. Germany Creek WMA provides a compact, accessible 1,200-acre public option north of Thomson. GADNR notes that Piedmont WMAs average among the better deer numbers and buck quality statewide, making McDuffie a worthwhile destination for public-land hunters willing to scout and work the terrain.
