DMU Lumpkin, Georgia

Lumpkin County lies entirely within the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia, the southernmost reach of the Appalachians. Elevations range from roughly 1,400 feet in the river valleys to over 3,400 feet on the higher ridges. Terrain is steep and heavily forested with mixed hardwoods — white oak, red oak, hickory, yellow poplar — interspersed with pines and dense rhododendron thickets in the hollows. The Chestatee River and its tributaries drain much of the county, carving tight drainages that funnel deer movement. Approximately one-third of the county lies within the Chattahoochee National Forest. Reduced timber harvesting since the early 2000s has allowed the canopy to mature, which limits the mast-producing understory that deer depend on compared to managed timberlands farther south.

Low relative to the rest of Georgia. Deer densities in the north Georgia mountains run well below those in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain, which naturally suppresses hunter numbers. Accounts from Chestatee and Blue Ridge WMAs describe hunters spending 20 to 30 mornings afield without encountering another person in the backcountry. Trailhead access points and road-accessible ridges see moderate pressure at the season opener, but interior drainages draw few hunters. The restricted either-sex firearms-day structure also self-selects for more committed, experienced hunters rather than casual weekend pressure common in southern Georgia.

Statewide bag limit is 12 deer per season — maximum 10 antlerless and 2 antlered bucks, with at least one buck required to meet quality criteria. Lumpkin County carries restricted either-sex (doe) days during the firearms season; antlerless deer may only be taken with firearms on Nov. 2-3, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, and Dec. 28-29. All other firearms days in the county are bucks only. The special early antlerless-only firearms weekend (Oct. 4-5) is not open in Lumpkin or any other north Georgia mountain county. Archery and primitive weapons seasons allow antlerless harvest every open day. Season dates 2025-2026: archery Sept. 13 through Jan. 11; primitive weapons (muzzleloader and qualifying air guns) Oct. 11 through Jan. 11; firearms Oct. 18 through Jan. 11.

Deer: archery Sept. 13 through Jan. 11, 2026; primitive weapons Oct. 11 through Jan. 11; firearms Oct. 18 through Jan. 11; either-sex firearms days restricted to Nov. 2-3, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, and Dec. 28-29 only — all other firearms days are bucks only. Turkey: spring gobbler season typically runs mid-March through mid-May; Lumpkin is part of north Georgia's Appalachian turkey range with good public-land opportunities on Chestatee WMA and national forest. Feral hogs are present and may be taken with deer-legal weapons during any open deer season; nighttime hog hunting with lights is permitted on private land with no additional license requirement. Black bear: north Georgia carries a regulated bear season concurrent with deer seasons — archery, primitive weapons, and firearms components — requiring a bear Harvest Record; both Chestatee and Blue Ridge WMAs hold huntable bear populations. Small game including squirrel and ruffed grouse (limited) available on WMA lands.

Lumpkin County offers one of Georgia's most distinctive big-game hunting experiences — a true Blue Ridge mountain hunt on national forest and WMA ground in the heart of Dahlonega gold country. The combined acreage of Chestatee WMA, Blue Ridge WMA, and the Chattahoochee National Forest makes this one of north Georgia's stronger public-land options despite modest overall deer densities. Black bear and Appalachian wild turkey provide genuine bonus-species appeal unavailable in any Piedmont county. Mountain bucks in this terrain tend to carry exceptional frame from the demanding topography, and the restricted doe-day structure builds a more natural age structure than more liberal counties to the south. Hunters who commit to the steep ridges and remote hollow drainages find genuine solitude — interior WMA country here sees less human pressure than virtually anywhere else in Georgia east of the Cohuttas.
