DMU Lee, Georgia

Lee County occupies the Upper Coastal Plain of southwest Georgia, with gently rolling to nearly flat topography at elevations of roughly 200–350 feet. The landscape is a mosaic of row-crop fields (peanuts, cotton, corn, soybeans), pine plantations, and bottomland hardwoods along the Flint River, which forms the county's western boundary. Sandy loam soils dominate uplands while rich alluvial deposits line creek drainages and river bottoms.

Moderate to high on managed private land, effectively nil on public land (virtually none exists in the county). The county's trophy reputation drives strong demand for leases and plantation memberships, with most private tracts operating under quality deer management (QDM) programs that selectively harvest mature bucks. Walk-in hunters have essentially no public access.

Georgia statewide bag limit applies: 10 antlerless deer and 2 antlered deer per season (12 total); one antlered deer must have at least 4 points (1 inch or longer) on one side or a minimum 15-inch outside spread. A new antlerless-only firearms weekend (Oct. 4–5, 2025) applies to Lee County. Season structure: Archery Sept. 13–Oct. 10; Primitive Weapons Oct. 11–17; Firearms Oct. 18, 2025–Jan. 11, 2026. Lee County is not among the extended-season southwest counties.

White-tailed deer are the primary quarry with archery opening Sept. 13, primitive weapons Oct. 11, and firearms Oct. 18 through Jan. 11. Spring turkey season runs late March through mid-May statewide. Feral hogs are present and may be taken year-round on private land with no closed season or bag limit. Mourning dove season opens Sept. 1. Bobwhite quail, though diminished statewide, remain a traditional plantation pursuit on managed lands. Squirrel and rabbit seasons are also available under standard Georgia regulations.

Lee County ranks among Georgia's top-10 trophy buck producers, with at least nine bucks officially scored over 140 inches on record. Abundant row-crop agriculture — peanuts, cotton, and corn — provides exceptional year-round nutrition and draws deer into predictable feeding patterns at field edges. The Flint River corridor delivers dense bottomland hardwood cover and major travel routes. Plantation culture and QDM are deeply embedded here, with many landowners practicing selective harvest to grow mature bucks over multiple seasons. This is Georgia's plantation belt at its finest: Midwestern-enhanced genetics, premium agricultural food sources, and disciplined management combine to produce some of the largest-bodied, heaviest-antlered whitetails in the Southeast.
