DMU Jenkins, Georgia

Upper Coastal Plain county in southeastern Georgia covering approximately 350 square miles of flat to gently rolling terrain. The Ogeechee River is the defining feature, threading through the county and creating blackwater drainages, cypress swamp bottoms, and bottomland hardwood corridors. Land cover is dominated by managed loblolly pine plantations, row-crop agriculture (cotton, peanuts, corn, soybeans), and riparian wetlands along the river and tributary streams. Elevations are low and relief is minimal, consistent with the Atlantic Coastal Plain physiographic province.

Low to moderate. Jenkins County is sparsely populated (under 9,000 residents) and largely off the radar of traveling hunters. Private-land lease holders dominate harvest on extensive timber tracts. The lone public WMA at 1,692 acres can see moderate competition given its small footprint and convenience to Millen, but overall county pressure is well below Georgia's urban-fringe or famous plantation-belt destinations.

Statewide limit of 12 deer per season: no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered; at least one antlered buck must carry a minimum of 4 points (1 inch or longer) on one side or a minimum 15-inch outside spread. GREEN zone either-sex firearms: antlerless-only weekend Oct. 4-5, 2025, then full either-sex Oct. 18, 2025 through Jan. 11, 2026. Archery either-sex runs Sept. 13 through Jan. 11. Primitive weapons and youth season Oct. 11-17. The 10-doe limit allows aggressive antlerless harvest throughout the season.

Deer archery (either-sex): Sept. 13 - Jan. 11, 2026. Primitive weapons/youth: Oct. 11-17, 2025. Firearms (GREEN zone, either-sex): Oct. 4-5 antlerless only, Oct. 18 - Jan. 11, 2026. Spring turkey: private land March 28 - May 15, 2026; public land (Big Dukes Pond WMA) April 4 - May 15, 2026; limit 2 gobblers. Feral hogs: no closed season on private land; public land season Aug. 15 - Feb. 28. Small game and waterfowl hunting available at Big Dukes Pond WMA, which contains a Carolina bay particularly attractive to waterfowl.

The Ogeechee River corridor anchors the county's best deer habitat, with swamp-edge hardwoods, cane thickets, and river-bottom mast producers holding bucks through the rut. Big Dukes Pond WMA offers a rare public-access option in a landscape dominated by private timber leases, with its Carolina bay wetland providing bonus waterfowl and turkey hunting. The liberal 10-doe antlerless limit and long either-sex season reward both meat hunters and those managing property for quality bucks. Private pine plantation leases — plentiful in this timber-economy county — historically produce solid Coastal Plain deer, and low overall hunting pressure keeps the county a genuine off-the-radar pick in Georgia's Lower Coastal Plain.
