Houston County lies at the Fall Line in the Upper Atlantic Coastal Plain of central Georgia, roughly 100 miles south of Atlanta. Topography is flat to gently rolling with sandy loam Coastal Plain soils on the uplands. The Ocmulgee River traces the eastern county boundary, and creek drainages cutting inland create hardwood bottomland habitat — white oak flats, river cane edges, and swamp corridors — that concentrate deer movement. Pine plantation covers large swaths of the county, managed for timber, with a Piedmont-influenced mix of red clay and mixed hardwood in the northern tier giving way to loblolly and longleaf pine flats to the south. The county seat of Warner Robins and Robins Air Force Base urbanize the central core; the prime huntable landscape lies south and east along the Ocmulgee corridor.

Moderate to high by Georgia standards. Oaky Woods WMA draws consistent pressure from the Warner Robins and Macon metro areas — a combined population well over 200,000 within an hour's drive — compressing public-land hunters onto a well-known tract. Opening weekends of archery and firearms seasons see busy campgrounds and parking areas at Oaky Woods. Private land is predominantly club-leased with limited walk-in opportunity. Midweek and late-season pressure on the WMA lightens considerably. Overall the county ranks above average in hunting pressure for middle Georgia due to urban proximity, but not at the extreme levels seen in metro counties.

Statewide bag limit: 12 deer per season, no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered. One of the 2 antlered deer must have at least 4 points (1 inch or longer) on one side or a minimum 15-inch outside spread. Houston County is in the Green region — either-sex is open throughout the entire archery and standard firearms season with no restricted antlerless days. Does can be legally harvested from the first day of archery (Sept. 13) through the end of firearms season (Jan. 11), making Georgia's antlerless opportunity among the most liberal in the Southeast. No antler restrictions beyond the quality-buck requirement for the second antlered deer.

Spring turkey: private land Mar. 28–May 15, 2026; public land Apr. 4–May 15, 2026; limit 2 gobblers per season (1 per public-land area per hunter). Feral hogs: no closed season on private land; at Oaky Woods WMA hogs may be taken concurrent with open deer and small game seasons — check current WMA-specific regulations. Houston County falls within the Southern Bear Zone with brief managed quota firearms hunts (Sept. 18–20, Sept. 25–27, Oct. 2–4, Oct. 9–11) requiring a permit. Small game: squirrel Aug. 15–Feb. 28 (12/day), rabbit Nov. 15–Feb. 28 (12/day), quail Nov. 8–Feb. 28 (12/day). Dove season statewide Sept. 6–Oct. 12, Nov. 22–30, Dec. 19–Jan. 31.

Oaky Woods WMA is the hunting centerpiece of central Georgia — over 12,000 acres of managed pine and hardwood habitat in Houston and Pulaski Counties offering deer, turkey, feral hog, and small game access on one of the largest public tracts between Atlanta and the coast. The Ocmulgee River corridor along the eastern county line provides classic river-bottom deer habitat with mature hardwood flats that produce consistent buck movement during the rut, which peaks late October through mid-November at this latitude. The Fall Line geology creates habitat diversity — Piedmont hardwood transitions in the north bleeding into Coastal Plain pine drainages to the south — concentrating wildlife along cover edges. Liberal either-sex regulations allow antlerless harvest from opening day of archery through the last day of firearms season, making Houston County productive for hunters targeting freezer deer as well as quality bucks. Feral hogs are well-established at Oaky Woods and across private timber holdings, providing bonus hunting from season open through season close on private ground.
