DMU Henry, Georgia

Henry County occupies the Georgia Piedmont roughly 25 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta, with gently rolling hills at 700–1,000 feet elevation underlain by crystalline rock and red clay soils. The South River drains the eastern half of the county while the Towaliga River originates in the southwest, both flowing into the Ocmulgee River drainage. Bottomland hardwoods line creek corridors; uplands support a patchwork of mixed pine-hardwood stands, old fields, and suburban development that has consumed much of the northern and central county. The southern rural fringe retains the most intact forested cover.

Low. Henry County's suburban character suppresses hunter density far below statewide averages. Safety setback requirements effectively eliminate gun hunting on most smaller suburban parcels, and many landowners are reluctant to grant access. Deer encounter far fewer hunters here than in rural Georgia counties, allowing bucks to reach older age classes — a pattern consistent across the metro Atlanta suburban ring.

Statewide bag limit of 12 deer per season applies, with a maximum of 10 antlerless deer and 2 antlered bucks. At least one of the two bucks must meet Georgia's Quality Buck criteria: a minimum of 4 antler points one inch or longer on one side, OR a minimum 15-inch outside spread. Henry County is in the Green region, where antlerless harvest is permitted throughout the entire firearms season (either-sex all season). The county is also on the extended archery list, allowing archery-only deer hunting through January 31.

Deer archery season runs September 13 through January 31 (Henry is an extended archery county); primitive weapons October 11–17; firearms October 18 through January 11. A 2-day antlerless-only early firearms season (October 4–5) applies to select counties — verify Henry County inclusion in current GADNR regulations. Spring turkey season opens March 28 on private land (youth/mobility-impaired weekend March 21) and closes May 15; bag limit is 1 gobbler per day, 2 per season. Feral hogs may be taken year-round on private land with no bag limit, including at night with a handheld light. Small game (squirrel, rabbit, dove) and waterfowl seasons apply to suitable private tracts.

Henry County's most compelling asset is its suburban paradox: development has all but eliminated hunting pressure, yet deer populations are high and bucks routinely age past what rural Georgia counties produce. An archery hunter who builds landowner relationships in the southern rural fringe or creek-bottom corridors can encounter mature bucks with minimal competition. The extended archery season through January 31 adds a bonus window unavailable in most of the state. Access requires landowner relationships — there is no walk-in public land — but hunters who do the legwork find a low-pressure, underrated environment within an hour of Atlanta.
