DMU Gordon, Georgia

Ridge and Valley physiographic province in northwest Georgia, transitioning from the southern Blue Ridge foothills to the Great Valley. Elevation ranges from roughly 600 feet on the Calhoun valley floor to over 1,400 feet on Horn Mountain and Baugh Mountain ridges, with parallel northeast-southwest ridgelines typical of the province. Land cover mixes hardwood coves, pine-hardwood slopes, and open agricultural bottomland along the Coosawattee, Conasauga, and Oostanaula river corridors. The broad Calhoun valley supports hay fields, row crops, and pasture that feed deer year-round, while forested ridges provide thermal cover and hard mast. Rich creek drainages and river terraces create layered whitetail habitat across the county's 356 square miles.

The absence of a county WMA keeps walk-in public pressure concentrated on the relatively small Chattahoochee NF tract near Sugar Valley, so those ridges see noticeable foot traffic during firearms season. Private lease culture is strong throughout the agricultural valley and timber land, but most quality ground is locked up in multi-year leases with limited outsider access. Overall pressure is lower than south Georgia counties anchored by large WMAs, and well below metro-fringe counties. River-bottom parcels with food plots on private lease land hunt best and draw the most repeat attention.

Statewide season limit of 12 deer (maximum 10 antlerless, maximum 2 antlered). One of the two bucks must be a quality buck — at least 4 antler points of 1 inch or longer on one side, or a minimum 15-inch outside antler spread. Gordon County is NOT among the counties with restricted either-sex days, so antlerless deer may be legally harvested throughout archery, primitive weapons, and firearms seasons. A new antlerless-only firearms weekend (Oct 4-5, 2025) precedes the general opener and applies to most counties including Gordon. All harvested deer must be reported via Georgia Game Check within 24 hours of harvest.

Spring turkey season runs mid-March through mid-May statewide (bearded birds, 3-bird season limit). Feral hogs have no closed season in Georgia and may be taken year-round with a valid hunting license; hogs are well established on Chattahoochee NF land and private timber tracts throughout Gordon County. Small game seasons cover squirrel, rabbit, and dove. Note: Chattahoochee National Forest land east of I-75 is closed to antlerless deer; Gordon County's NF holdings are primarily west of I-75 and follow standard either-sex rules.

Gordon County rewards hunters who gain access to its agricultural valley bottoms — Coosawattee and Conasauga river terraces produce quality body weights and consistent deer numbers thanks to abundant food sources in the Great Valley. The Chattahoochee National Forest at The Pocket provides genuine free public hunting on forested ridges just minutes from Calhoun, offering an underappreciated walk-in option in northwest Georgia. Private timber tracts and crop-adjacent leases consistently yield mature bucks, and the Ridge and Valley topography funnels deer movement along predictable benches and saddles between agricultural flats and wooded ridgelines. Year-round hog hunting adds a bonus season for hunters with private access. The county's position at the Blue Ridge-Great Valley transition delivers diverse habitat holding deer, turkey, and small game simultaneously across a compact 356-square-mile footprint.
