DMU Gilmer, Georgia

Gilmer County sits entirely within the Blue Ridge Mountains of north Georgia, one of eleven counties in the state's mountain region. Elevations rise from roughly 800 feet along the Coosawattee and Cartecay River bottoms to over 4,000 feet on surrounding ridges. The landscape is dominated by steep, rugged hardwood and mixed pine-hardwood forest with dense mountain laurel understory on north-facing slopes. Carters Lake reservoir provides a significant water feature at the county's western edge. The terrain features numerous creek drainages, hollows, and ridge systems typical of the southern Appalachians.

Moderate to high on accessible WMA ridges and creek bottoms. Cohutta WMA draws heavy pressure from Atlanta-area hunters due to its size and proximity, but rugged terrain quickly filters casual hunters into the interior. Rich Mountain WMA sees lighter overall pressure. Deer populations on both areas run below state averages due to decades of limited timber harvest combined with high black bear and coyote predation, making Gilmer County deer hunting genuinely challenging compared to most of Georgia.

Statewide season limit is 12 deer: no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered. One antlered buck must be a quality buck (minimum 4 points 1 inch or longer on one side, or 15-inch outside spread); the second may be any legal buck with visible antlers above the hairline. Gilmer is a restricted mountain county — either-sex days during the firearms season are limited and must be verified annually against the GADNR county-specific schedule. Gilmer is excluded from the October 4-5 antlerless-only firearms weekend available to most other Georgia counties.

Deer: archery opens September 13 and runs through January 11; youth and primitive weapons season October 11-17; general firearms October 18 through January 11. Antlerless harvest during firearms season subject to limited either-sex days (check GADNR schedule annually). Wild turkey: spring season typically runs late March through early May, 3-bird limit (male or bearded). Feral hogs may be taken during deer and turkey seasons on WMAs; on private land hogs are legal year-round with no bag limit. Black bear: hunting permitted during designated seasons on Cohutta and Rich Mountain WMAs. Small game including squirrel, ruffed grouse, and rabbit also available on WMA lands.

Gilmer County offers a true southern Appalachian deer hunting experience — steep terrain, big hardwood timber, and the chance to encounter black bear on the same property. The combination of Rich Mountain WMA and a slice of the vast Cohutta WMA gives public-land hunters access to tens of thousands of acres with far less deer competition than easier-terrain counties. Carters Lake and the Coosawattee and Cartecay river corridors create natural travel lanes for deer moving between ridge systems. While deer densities run below Georgia averages due to predator pressure and limited forest understory, mature bucks do live in the rugged interior. Hunters willing to work elevation and scout oak flat to cove hardwood transition zones have genuine opportunity for quality deer, and the mountain scenery is unmatched in Georgia.
