Fannin County sits in Georgia's extreme northeast corner within the Blue Ridge physiographic province of the Appalachian Mountains. Managed under the Cyan Zone — Georgia WRD's most restrictive antlerless tier — antlerless deer may only be harvested on two narrow either-sex windows during the firearms season (Nov 7–13, 2025 and Jan 1, 2026), making it one of the toughest doe-harvest counties in the state. The county hosts two major WMAs: Blue Ridge WMA (20,900 acres, Fannin/Union/Lumpkin) and Cohutta WMA (96,583 acres, Murray/Fannin/Gilmer), both primarily U.S. Forest Service land. Rugged, steep, mature hardwood-and-pine terrain holds low deer densities — estimated 1.9–3.9 deer/km² — suppressed further by decades of reduced timber harvest and elevated bear and coyote predation pressure. Public land hunting pressure is moderate-to-high near trailheads but drops sharply with elevation and distance from access roads. Success rates are among the lowest in Georgia; hunters targeting this unit should prioritize thermal management, acorn-producing ridgelines, and the limited either-sex firearms windows.

Terrain & elevation

Extreme northeast Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains; rugged steep ridges with mature mixed hardwood and pine, scattered mountain laurel thickets, small openings, numerous creeks and drainages. Elevation gain from valley floors to ridge tops creates pronounced thermal currents. Part of Chattahoochee National Forest.

Hunting pressure

Moderate-to-high near trailheads and parking areas; drops significantly with distance and elevation. Overall hunter density low relative to south Georgia but deer density also very low (1.9–3.9 deer/km² vs historical highs of 7–9/km²). Cohutta described as 'some of the toughest deer hunting in the state.' Bear and coyote predation compound low deer numbers.

Tags & permits

Cyan Zone — Georgia's most restrictive antlerless zone. Antlerless deer legal only on two either-sex firearms windows: Nov 7–13, 2025 and Jan 1, 2026. All other firearms days are antlered bucks only. Archery (Sept 13 – Oct 10) and primitive weapons (Oct 11–17) seasons are either-sex. Statewide bag limit 12 deer total, max 10 antlerless, max 2 antlered.

Species & seasons

Archery season: Sept 13 – Oct 10, 2025 (either-sex). Primitive weapons/muzzleloader: Oct 11–17, 2025 (either-sex). Firearms: Oct 18, 2025 – Jan 11, 2026 — antlered bucks only except either-sex windows Nov 7–13 and Jan 1. Turkey hunting available spring season on both WMAs. Bear, small game, and feral hogs also present on Cohutta WMA.

Highlights

One of Georgia's most challenging deer units — strict Cyan Zone antlerless limits, low deer density, and steep roadless backcountry reward disciplined hunters who work hard. Best opportunity during the Nov 7–13 either-sex window when deer are entering rut. Thermal mastery critical in mountain terrain. Cohutta WMA is among Georgia's largest public hunting tracts at 96,000+ acres. Scenically spectacular Blue Ridge mountains with minimal competition for remote ridges.
