Lower Coastal Plain — flat to gently rolling, elevation 20-100 ft. Dominated by planted pine plantations and mixed longleaf/loblolly pine timber with bottomland hardwoods (live oak, water oak, sweetgum) along the Ogeechee and Savannah River corridors. Wetland drainages, beaver ponds, and agricultural fields (soybeans, corn) create productive deer habitat edges. Hot, humid summers; mild winters. Sandy, well-drained upland soils transitioning to hydric soils in bottoms.

Moderate to high on accessible private ground due to the large Savannah suburban population. Well-managed timber-company leases and private clubs with selective harvest can produce quality bucks. Walk-in public access is very limited; competition for available leases is strong. WMA sign-in hunts elsewhere in coastal Georgia draw hunters away, but Effingham itself is largely lease-dependent.

Effingham County is in Georgia's Green Zone (most of the state). Antlerless deer may be harvested throughout the entire either-sex firearms season — no separate limited doe days apply. An additional antlerless-only early firearms opportunity (typically first weekend of October) was added statewide for Green Zone counties starting 2025-2026. Statewide bag limit: 12 deer total per season, no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered bucks. One of the two bucks must meet Quality Buck criteria (4+ points 1 inch or longer on one side, or 15-inch minimum outside spread).

2025-2026 season dates: Archery Sept 13 – Oct 10; Primitive weapons (muzzleloader) Oct 11 – Oct 17; Firearms Oct 18 – Jan 11. Green Zone antlerless-only early firearms dates approx. Oct 4-5 (confirm with current regs). Wild turkey season runs spring (typically mid-March through mid-May statewide); fall turkey season available in some counties — check current regulations. Legal archery equipment includes longbow, recurve, compound, and crossbow with broadheads. Legal primitive weapons include .30-cal+ muzzleloading rifles/shotguns (20-ga+), airbows, and .30-cal+ air rifles. Legal firearms include centerfire rifles .22-cal+ with expanding bullets, shotguns 20-ga+ with slugs or buckshot, and muzzleloaders with scopes permitted.

Productive mixed-ag and timber habitat corridor between two major river systems supports healthy deer numbers and solid turkey populations. Green Zone status means full-season antlerless opportunity — one of the most liberal doe harvest structures in the Southeast. Proximity to Savannah metro makes lease access competitive but also means well-developed hunting infrastructure. The Ogeechee River bottomland hardwood stands are the standout habitat feature — mature oak flats adjacent to agricultural edges create classic Georgia coastal plain trophy-buck conditions for hunters willing to invest in a quality lease.
