DMU Dooly, Georgia

Central Georgia agricultural lowlands along the Flint River. Approximately 393 square miles of fertile bottomland and upland timber. Primary crops include cotton (97,590 harvested acres), peanuts (20,247 acres), and wheat, interspersed with pine and hardwood timber tracts. River bottomland along the Flint provides natural travel corridors and edge habitat. Elevation is low and terrain gentle, typical of the Coastal Plain physiographic province.

High interest relative to available acreage — Flint River WMA carries a strong reputation for trophy bucks and draws applicants statewide, but the quota system keeps actual hunter density low during managed hunts. Outside quota periods the WMA is closed to deer hunting. Private land pressure is moderate; the county is thinly populated and most farms are under long-term lease to established hunter groups. Walk-in access on private land is uncommon.

Green Zone (most of Georgia) — antlerless deer may be harvested every day of the firearms season with no restricted doe-day calendar. Statewide bag limit: 12 deer per season total, maximum 10 antlerless and 2 antlered. Dooly County carries a county-specific antler restriction: all harvested antlered bucks must have a minimum 15-inch outside antler spread. One of two antlered deer must meet quality standards (4 points 1 inch or longer on one side, OR 15-inch spread). New for 2025: an early antlerless-only firearms weekend October 4-5 on private lands in eligible Green Zone counties. All harvested deer must be reported via Georgia Game Check within 24 hours.

Deer seasons (2025-2026): Archery Sep 13 to Oct 10, either-sex statewide. Primitive Weapons and Youth Firearms Oct 11-17. Statewide Firearms Oct 18 2025 to Jan 11 2026, either-sex throughout in Dooly (Green Zone). New early antlerless firearms weekend Oct 4-5 on private land. Turkey season follows standard south Georgia spring dates. Feral hogs may be taken on Flint River WMA. Small game, dove, and waterfowl opportunities also present given the county agricultural character.

Dooly County is consistently cited among Georgia top counties for trophy whitetails, with bucks exceeding 125 inches recorded from the Flint River corridor. The combination of large-scale row-crop agriculture (cotton, peanuts), river-bottom hardwoods, and strong genetics produces deer with excellent body size and antler quality. The 15-inch antler spread restriction signals a local commitment to quality-deer management. Flint River WMA offers a legitimate public-land trophy opportunity — its quota system means if you draw a tag you are hunting alongside few other hunters on land known for mature bucks. Liberal antlerless rules (Green Zone, either-sex all season) make doe management straightforward.
