DMU DeKalb, Georgia

Heavily urbanized and suburban Piedmont terrain in metro Atlanta. Remaining huntable habitat consists of residential woodlots, stream corridors, greenway buffers, and scattered forested parcels along Peachtree Creek, South Fork Peachtree Creek, and similar drainages. Topography is gently rolling Piedmont with mixed hardwoods — oaks, sweetgum, tulip poplar — interspersed with developed land. No large contiguous forest blocks exist within county boundaries.

Very low compared to rural Georgia counties. The combination of firearms prohibition, no public land, and limited private tracts that allow hunting means relatively few hunters are in the field. Deer experience minimal harvest pressure, allowing bucks to age significantly. Urban deer are largely accustomed to human presence and human-altered food sources, making them patternable by a patient bowhunter.

DeKalb County is an either-sex archery-only county. Firearms deer hunting is prohibited by state law. Statewide bag limit is 12 deer per season (max 10 antlerless, max 2 antlered bucks); one antlered buck must have at least 4 points 1 inch or longer on one side, or a minimum 15-inch outside spread. All deer must be registered via Georgia Game Check within 24 hours of harvest. A free annual Deer Harvest Record is required for all hunters.

Archery and primitive weapons only — no firearms. Archery season runs approximately Sept 13 through Jan 31 (DeKalb qualifies for the extended metro archery season to Jan 31). Primitive weapons season runs statewide Oct 11–17 where legal; the county firearms prohibition effectively excludes standard gun season. Turkey hunting opportunities are extremely limited given the urban land base; any turkey hunting would be archery-only on private land. White-tailed deer are the primary game species.

DeKalb is one of metro Atlanta gray-zone counties where a bowhunter willing to knock on doors can find mature, unharvested bucks living in greenway corridors and suburban woodlots. Bucks reach ages rarely seen on public or rural private land because harvest pressure is extremely low. The extended archery season to January 31 gives hunters extra weeks compared to most rural counties. Hunting here is as much about social access as woodsmanship — landowner relationships are the currency.
