Zone 4a, Connecticut

Mixed hardwood forest dominated by oak, maple, and beech interspersed with agricultural fields and brushy edges. Rolling hills typical of the Connecticut River Valley uplands in north-central CT. Portions of Hartford, Litchfield, and Tolland counties. Elevation modest but varied, with forested ridges and stream drainages providing natural funnels. Rural to suburban mix, more rural and wooded in the northern reaches toward the Litchfield Hills.

Antlerless-only tags are NOT valid in Zone 4a — only the either-sex deer tag may be used. This restriction reflects CTDEEP management goals to maintain deer density in the northern zone, where archery hunter success rates are among the lowest in the state. No additional antlerless quota permits are issued for this zone. Hunters are limited to their either-sex tag and any bonus tags applicable to private land seasons.

DEER: Archery season September 15 - December 31 on private land (all zones); state land bowhunting areas September 15 - November 17 and December 23-31. Firearms (shotgun/rifle) season private land November 18 - December 8; state land lottery season November 18 - December 8. Muzzleloader season December 10-31 private land, December 10-23 state land. Only either-sex tag valid in Zone 4a — antlerless-only tag not valid. Bag limit statewide is 2 either-sex plus 2 antlerless (4 total) but Zone 4a antlerless restriction limits harvest. TURKEY: Spring season April 29 - May 30, legal hours one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Fall archery turkey season September 15 - December 31 on private land. Fall firearms turkey season October 3-31 on state and private land. Game Bird Conservation Stamp required. BEAR: No regulated black bear hunting season in Connecticut as of 2026; bear presence increasing in northwestern CT but Zone 4a is not a designated bear hunting zone. FIREARM DISCHARGE RESTRICTIONS: Statewide 500-foot safety zone from occupied buildings applies to all firearms hunting; does not apply to bowhunting. In rural portions of Zone 4a this is manageable, but hunters near towns must plan stand placement accordingly.

Large blocks of public forest at Tunxis and Nepaug state forests provide genuine wilderness-feel hunting in a densely populated state. Oak-mast ridges concentrate deer in fall. Turkey hunting is excellent statewide including Zone 4a, with strong spring gobbler populations throughout the mixed forest. The either-sex-only tag rule means bucks are the primary target, which suits trophy-focused hunters. Lower hunting pressure than southern CT suburban zones.
