Forested ridgelines and hardwood hills across the Litchfield and Hartford county uplands, with river valley corridors, beaver wetlands, and agricultural field edges providing diverse deer habitat. Elevations range from 400 to over 1,200 feet. Mixed oak-hickory forest dominates the slopes, transitioning to hemlock and white pine along drainages. The terrain is more rugged and less fragmented than eastern or coastal CT zones, supporting naturally lower human density and stronger wildlife populations.

Zone 10 allows standard antlerless deer permit tags under Connecticut's lottery system. Applications open January 2 each year online through CTDEEP. Hunters may take up to 2 either-sex deer and 2 additional antlerless deer under archery tags per season. Antlerless-only tags are valid in Zone 10 (unlike restricted Zones 2 and 4A). Both private and state land lottery permits are available; state land hunters also need a No-Lottery State Land Permit for firearms hunting on state property.

DEER: Archery season Sept 15 - Dec 31 (private land) or Sept 15 - Nov 17 and Dec 23 - Dec 31 (state land). Firearm season Nov 1 - Dec 31 (private and state land with appropriate permits). Muzzleloader season runs concurrently with firearms and during a late January muzzleloader-only window. Bag limit 2 either-sex plus 2 antlerless tags archery; 1 either-sex tag firearm season. No firearm discharge restrictions specific to Zone 10 (rural/forested zone, not a suburban safety zone). Sunday hunting allowed on private land subject to standard 40-yard blazed trail buffer. TURKEY: Spring season April 29 - May 30; fall archery Sept 15 - Dec 31; fall firearms Oct 3 - Oct 31. Bag limit 5 bearded birds spring. BEAR: Black bears are present and regularly documented in Zone 10 and all of northwestern CT. As of 2026, bear hunting remains prohibited in Connecticut; CTDEEP and some legislators have pushed for a limited Litchfield County bear lottery season but no season has been enacted. Hunters should be aware of bears at bait sites and in the field.

Zone 10 is one of Connecticut's premier big-game zones, combining generous public land acreage with healthy deer densities and active wild turkey flocks. The zone sits squarely within Connecticut's northwestern bear corridor, offering close encounters with black bears even without a huntable season. Long archery seasons (Sept 15 - Dec 31 on private land) give bowhunters exceptional opportunity, and the mix of agricultural edges against forested hills creates classic rut-hunting conditions in November. Turkey hunting is productive in both spring and fall on the forested ridges.
