Unit 94, Colorado

Nearly flat to gently rolling plains terrain; elevation ranges from 4,600 to 5,100 feet. The unit is characterized by river bottomlands, irrigation canals, and broad agricultural fields with few topographic features. Approximately 80% of the area has slopes of 27 degrees or less. The limited public land (roughly 4.1% of the unit) tends to be steeper relative to the surrounding plains.

GMU 94 is almost entirely private land — approximately 95.9% private. Public access is extremely limited. The unit is bounded on the west by Interstate 25 and is crossed by US Highway 85 (running north-south through Greeley) and Colorado Route 7. No National Forest, BLM field office, or wilderness area falls within the unit. St. Vrain State Park (Longmont area) provides a small pocket of public access. Hunters must contact landowners or hire an outfitter for access; expect to pay for private land permission. Services available in Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, and Longmont.

Three primary habitat types: (1) irrigated cropland — corn, alfalfa, hay, turf farms, and dry wheat fields covering most of the unit; (2) sandsage and mid-grass prairie on drier uplands; (3) cottonwood riparian corridors — Russian olive, willow, and cottonwood lining the South Platte River, Big Thompson River, and St. Vrain Creek. These river-bottom riparian strips hold the highest wildlife densities in the unit.

Mule deer and white-tailed deer are the primary big game; both species concentrate in the river bottomlands along the South Platte River, Big Thompson River, and St. Vrain Creek, where mature bucks use riparian cover year-round. Whitetails occupy the South Platte corridor specifically. Elk are very scarce in this unit — the agricultural plains lack the mountain foothills habitat elk require. Pronghorn are present but lightly harvested; the unit is archery-only for pronghorn. Black bear and mountain lion may occasionally move through the riparian corridors but are not significant populations in this primarily plains unit. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been confirmed in deer in this region of northeast Colorado.
