Unit 127, Colorado

Level to gently rolling shortgrass plains rising slightly above the Arkansas River and its tributaries. Elevation ranges from approximately 3,397 ft along the Arkansas River corridor to 4,283 ft on the higher rolling prairie. No mountainous terrain; relief is minimal and provided mainly by creek drainages (Arkansas River, Big Sandy Creek) and associated bluffs. Total area approximately 956 square miles (611,939 acres).

Public land is scarce (approx. 9% of unit: 1% BLM, 8% State) and largely state-managed. Queens State Trust Land (38,352 acres, GMUs 126 and 127) is the primary public block, accessed from US Highway 287 south of Eads: Parking areas 1 and 2 are approximately 10.5 miles south on Hwy 287 (Area 1 east side, Area 2 west side); Parking area 3 is 12 miles south on Hwy 287 then 1 mile west on County Road F. Foot access only through designated parking areas; valid hunting or fishing license required for anyone 16+; open September 1 through end of February only. BLM land comprises roughly 1% of the unit and is scattered. The bulk of the best riparian deer habitat along the Arkansas River and Big Sandy Creek is on private land, much of it leased to outfitters. US Highway 287 is the main north-south corridor; State Highway 96 defines the northern boundary. The unit has no National Forest, no wilderness areas, and no seasonal road closures typical of mountain units. Shortgrass prairie dominates the uplands. Riparian corridors along the Arkansas River and Big Sandy Creek support cottonwood, tamarisk, willow, and mixed brush — the unit's highest-quality deer habitat. Dry and irrigated farmland (crops, alfalfa pivots) interspersed throughout; agricultural edges provide food and cover for deer and pronghorn. No pinyon-juniper, oakbrush, aspen, or spruce-fir; no alpine component. The western portion of the unit transitions to open shortgrass prairie favored by pronghorn.

Mule deer inhabit the Big Sandy Creek drainage and irrigated farmland; the unit has produced trophy-class bucks (a buck just under 200 inches documented in 2010). White-tailed deer concentrate in the Arkansas River bottomland and riparian corridors, with bucks typically in the 120–150 inch class; a 158-inch typical was recorded in 2009. Pronghorn occupy the western half of the unit on open shortgrass prairie. Black bear are present at low plains density; mountain lion are present following deer herds along the river corridor. Wild turkey and ring-necked pheasant round out game opportunities. Elk are not a resident species in this unit — the low plains elevation and lack of suitable habitat preclude a resident population. Deer in this unit do not exhibit significant altitudinal migration; they are year-round residents shifting between farmland, creek bottoms, and prairie cover seasonally.
