Unit 103, Colorado

Flat to gently rolling shortgrass plains dissected by the South Fork of the Republican River and several creek drainages. Elevations range from approximately 3,509 to 3,867 feet (per CPW South Republican SWA), making this one of the lowest-elevation hunting units in Colorado. The former Bonny Reservoir lakebed (drained 2011, converted from state park to SWA October 2011) has revegetated into dense riparian and shrub cover that acts as a major wildlife concentration point.

Primary public access is through the South Republican State Wildlife Area (18,365 acres, Yuma County), reached via US Highway 385 north of Burlington to County Road 1 (east). A valid Colorado hunting or fishing license, or an SWA pass, is required for everyone age 16 and older. Parking and access are restricted to designated areas only. East Beach and North Cove campgrounds operate with limited amenities; Wagon Wheel and Foster Grove campgrounds are closed. Fires permitted only within established containment structures in designated areas. Waterfowl hunting access is prohibited on the downstream face of the dam and as posted. A secondary parcel, Landsman Creek SWA (332 acres), lies approximately 18 miles north of Burlington — foot access only, no vehicle access. No National Forest or BLM land falls within this unit. Private land access for deer requires landowner permission; private ranches hold the majority of the unit's acreage.

Shortgrass prairie and sagebrush dominate uplands; yucca and prickly pear cactus are common. Extensive cultivated fields of corn, sunflower, alfalfa, and wheat provide year-round food sources that concentrate deer. Cottonwood and willow gallery forest lines the South Fork of the Republican River and other creek bottoms. The former Bonny Reservoir bed and surrounding floodplain now support dense riparian brush and emergent vegetation.

White-tailed deer and mule deer are the primary big-game species; whitetails are notably associated with the South Republican riparian corridor and former reservoir bed (confirmed by CPW warden and hunter reports), while mule deer use more open prairie habitat. Wild turkey, pheasant, bobwhite quail, and dove occupy riparian and agricultural edge habitat. Waterfowl use the South Republican SWA wetlands. Elk are not known to be managed in this unit. No established resident black bear or mountain lion populations are expected in this eastern plains agricultural unit.
