Zone X8, California

Per CDFW, terrain in Zone X-8 can be very steep and rugged and vegetation can be extremely dense. The zone boundary runs from the junction of the CA-NV state line and Highway 50, southeast along the state line, south to the Sierra crest, then northwest along the Sierra crest and the Pacific Crest Trail (near Wolf Creek Pass) to Highway 50 at Echo Summit. Historically popular and productive areas cited by CDFW include ridges around Hope Valley, Stevens Peak, Red Lake Peak, Forestdale Creek, Markleeville, Hawkins and Picketts Peaks, the Monitor Pass and Leviathan Peak areas, the south slope of Silver Mountain in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness, and the headwaters of the East Fork of the Carson River. GoHunt lists an approximate elevation range of 4,900 to 10,800 feet (lower-confidence, single secondary source).

Zone X-8 is almost entirely public land administered by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Carson Ranger District. The unit is bounded and entered via four primary state highways: US-50 and CA-89 from the north (the CA-89/CA-88 junction at Pickett's Junction is a key staging area), and CA-88 and CA-4 from the west. CA-89 over Monitor Pass (8,314 ft) is subject to seasonal winter closure, typically from late November through early April, which cuts off the eastern interior of the zone; CA-4 over Ebbetts Pass is similarly closed in winter. Within the unit, Blue Lakes Road (an unpaved, high-clearance dirt road branching south off CA-88) reaches the Lower Blue Lake, Middle Creek, and Upper Blue Lake USFS campgrounds, which serve as primary base camps; a signed Pacific Crest Trail parking area with a vault toilet is located near Blue Lakes Road. The USFS road to Hawkins Peak (a 4WD track that climbs from roughly 7,000 ft to 9,600 ft) is gated and closed, making the Hawkins Peak ridgeline accessible on foot only. Hope Valley Wildlife Area (roughly 2,900 acres) straddles the CA-89/CA-88 junction at Pickett's Junction and is open to hunting with foot access only; signed parking and restrooms are provided on the west side of the junction on CA-88, with additional signed access at Burnside Lake Road and the Willow Creek pullout off CA-89. Heenan Lake Wildlife Area (~1,700 acres, 7,000–8,000 ft elevation) is reached via a turnoff on the south side of CA-89 approximately 7.4 miles southeast of Markleeville (about 2 miles past the CA-4 junction); it is open to hunting with foot access only. The Carson-Iceberg Wilderness occupies the southern portion of the unit (south of CA-4) and is entirely non-motorized; the Ebbetts Pass Trailhead on CA-4 at 8,750 ft (open May–October, free self-issue wilderness permit required for overnight use) and Wolf Creek Trailhead (reached via Wolf Creek Road, a roughly 5-mile dirt road turning off CA-89/CA-4 about 7.3 miles southeast of Markleeville, open May–October) are the primary entry points. Pack-animal access into the southern wilderness is available from Wolf Creek Trailhead on the west and from Rodriguez Flat on the east (accessed via the steep Golden Gate Road off US-395 near Walker, where the Little Antelope Pack Station is located). Additional access to private land may be available through CDFW's Private Lands Management (PLM) and SHARE programs; hunters should check current CDFW listings for enrolled ranches in Alpine and El Dorado counties.

CDFW describes vegetation in Zone X-8 as highly varied, ranging from low sage, sagebrush, bitterbrush, montane chaparral, aspen, hardwood-conifer, juniper-pinyon and conifer to alpine habitats. Habitat grades from sagebrush flats at lower elevations to mixed-conifer forest to rimrock covered by mountain mahogany at higher elevations. Deer respond favorably to vegetation disturbances (wildfire, timber harvesting) that enhance brush; riparian areas, recently burned areas, and re-sprouted clear cuts are productive, while more densely forested areas and older decadent brushlands hold lower densities of deer.

CDFW classifies Zone X-8 deer as migratory: deer generally move to higher elevations near the Sierra Crest in early May and remain until the first heavy fall storms force them down below the snowline east of the crest and ultimately into Nevada. This downward movement can occur during the hunting season, so hunters should be prepared to move to lower areas later in the season after stormy weather. The herd is considered stable to slightly declining and well below levels seen in the late 1960s and 1970s, with the long-term decline attributed to land management practices that precluded fire, producing more mature and less diverse habitat. CDFW does not state zone-specific rut dates for X-8; general mule deer rut peaks in November (not zone-specific).
